ASL 102 American Sign Language II Credits: (3)
Students will acquire basic American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary and grammar skills that will enable them to effectively communicate in common and/or routine social interactions with a Deaf person. Conversational topics include but are not limited to the following: sports and leisure activities, preferences and opinions, dining out, describing appearances and personality traits, occupations, and health and medical situations. Students will also develop insight and understanding of the Deaf culture and community through exploration and comparing with their own culture and experiences. Upon successful completion of ASL 102, students may enroll inASL 201 American Sign Language III . Prerequisite(s): ASL 101 , or permission of instructor.

Learning Outcomes
- Utilize contextual clues to identify general meaning and key information in signed narratives and conversations with a Deaf person and other ASL users.
- Identify and differentiate between various grammatical structures and features of ASL, as compared to English.
- Execute proper production rules for fingerspelling and numbers clearly and accurately without hesitation.
- Demonstrate appropriate conversational behaviors to regulate the flow of communication and exchange of information and opinions.
- Use target vocabulary and grammar skills clearly and accurately without hesitation to ask and answer questions within conversational context.
- Analyze cultural values and perspectives, diverse experiences, history, and works of Deaf art and literature that are fundamental to American Deaf culture and community, as compared to one’s own experiences.
