ASL 201 American Sign Language III Credits: (3)
Students will acquire intermediate American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary and grammar skills that will enable them to effectively communicate in common and/or routine social interactions with a Deaf person. Conversational and narrative topics include but are not limited to the following: errands around town, monetary transactions, locating objects, weather and emergencies, events and trips, and future career plans. Students will also further develop insight and understanding of the Deaf culture and community through exploration and comparing with their own culture and experiences. Upon successful completion of ASL 201, students may enroll in ASL 202 American Sign Language IV . Prerequisite(s): ASL 102 , three to four years of high school ASL, or permission of instructor.

Learning Outcomes
- Utilize contextual clues to identify general meaning and key information in signed narratives and conversations with a Deaf person and other ASL users.
- Identify and differentiate between various grammatical structures and features of ASL, as compared to English.
- Execute proper production rules for fingerspelling and numbers clearly and accurately without hesitation.
- Use target vocabulary, grammar skills, and conversational behaviors clearly and accurately without hesitation to ask and answer questions within conversational context.
- Produce short narratives and informational presentations using appropriate ASL discourse structures and grammatical features.
- Analyze cultural values and perspectives, diverse experiences, history, and contemporary topics relative to American Deaf culture and community, as compared to one’s own experiences.
