ASL 210 Introduction to the Field of Interpreting

Credits: (3)
This course introduces students to the profession of signed language interpreting. It covers the history of interpreting as a field of professional practice and introduces students to the Code of Professional Conduct and terminology related to the field. Theoretical models of interpreting, employment options in regard to various settings, function of assessing as part of the interpreting process, impact of legislation on the field, and occupational stress are explored. Additional topics include the phenomena of cross-cultural dynamics, oppression of minority groups and the role of an interpreter as a practice professional. Prerequisite(s): ASL 201  or permission of instructor.

  1. Define terminology relevant to the field of interpreting.
  2. Describe historical and background information related to the field of interpreting, including its development as a profession and the development of professional organizations.
  3. Discuss, recognize, and describe the issues and the impact that language, power, and culture have on the communication process and on interpretation.
  4. List and explain the role, function, and responsibilities of a signed language interpreter.
  5. List and explain the cognitive and other current models of interpreting, including the function of assessing, as part of the interpreting process.
  6. Explain legislation affecting the interpreting field.
  7. Identify and explain the philosophical models of interpreting and the need for a code of professional conduct.
  8. Discuss various interpreting settings, including the physical set-up and skills required for each setting.
  9. Identify major causes and symptoms of occupational stress and describe exercises that may reduce the risk of injury and attrition.
  10. Recognize and describe business practices and future trends of the interpreting field.
