ASL 211 Fingerspelling and Numbers Skill Development Credits: (3)
This course is designed to develop intermediate receptive and expressive fingerspelling and number skills. This course provides an avenue to improve fingerspelled word and number recognition by providing theoretical information, practice in specific skills that underlie the fingerspelled whole word and phrase recognition process; identification of fingerspelled words and numbers in context; management strategies to request repetition of fingerspelled words and numbers; and production of short narratives that include fingerspelling, lexicalized fingerspelling and numbers. Expressive skills focus on the development of clear form, production, and fluency. Prerequisite(s): ASL 102 or permission of instructor.

Learning Outcomes
- Identify the structure and function of fingerspelling in ASL, as well as factors influencing fingerspelled word recognition.
- Identify and demonstrate examples of careful, rapid, and lexicalized fingerspelling in both rehearsed and spontaneous disourse.
- Use contextual clues, letter configuration, and closure strategies to recognized words or word groups when letters or words are missed or not clearly spelled.
- Recognize fingerspelled words and numbers at a normal rate performed by a variety of native and near-native signers of different gender, age, and ethnicity.
- Produce fingerspelling and numbers clearly and accurately without hesitation while demonstrating proper rate of transition from letter to letter in both rehearsed and spontaneous discourse.
