BIO 253 Genetics Credits: (4) This is a one-semester course with a required laboratory that covers the biological basis for patterns of inheritance, including the structure, function and regulation of DNA, genes and chromosomes. The biochemical nature of mutations will be discussed, along with the potential consequences, both harmful and beneficial. Methods of molecular genetic analysis will also be introduced. This course is intended for Math/Science majors, especially students interested in Biology, Pre-Med, Pre-Vet, Pre-Physicians Assistant, or Pre-Dent. Prerequisite(s): BIO 151 and BIO 152 (or equivalents) or permission of instructor.

Learning Outcomes
- Analyze patterns of inheritance, including Mendelian and non-Mendelian, and apply rules of probability to predict outcomes of crosses and determine inheritance patterns.
- Describe the structure and organization of chromosomes, the processes of mitosis and meiosis, including the consequences of meiosis for genetic reassortment, and demonstrate the ability to create linkeage maps.
- Explain the molecular processes of replication, transcription, translation, and gene regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
- Explain the nature of mutations, and apply the Hardy-Weinberg law to explain the forces that stabilize allele frequencies in a population.
- Describe biotechnology and molecular genetics techniques.
