FPT 262 Fire Investigation II Credits: (3)
This course is intended to provide the student with advanced technical knowledge on case law as it pertains to fire investigation, interpreting the effects of Fire Dynamics on fire investigations, evidence collection and preservation techniques, scene documentation, case preparation and courtroom testimony. Prerequisite(s): FPT 151 , FPT 158 , FPT 252 , and permission of instructor.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify and describe applicable case law as it pertains to fire investigation, arrest, search and seizure.
- Interpret a fire scene.
- Describe the chemistry of combustion.
- Explain the nature of Fire Dynamics, Thermodynamics, and Thermometry.
- Analyze electrical causes of fire.
- Identify evidence documentation methods, evidence collection techniques, and evidence preservation procedures.
- Explain explosive dynamics and how it relates to incendiary devices, explosives and bombs.
- List the procedures for fire scene documentation.
- Analyze fire-related deaths and injuries.
- Discuss interviewing and interrogation techniques.
- Explain the role of the fire investigator in courtroom demeanor and testifying.
- Explain the methods used in failure analysis and analytical tools available.
- List the resources and technology available for fire investigations.
