HUM 152 Human Services: Beginning Skills and Competencies Credits: (3)
This course introduces students to the skills and competencies necessary for professional and ethical conduct appropriate to career fields in Human Services. The course addresses the emotional and psychological stamina needed to work in the Human Services field; examines the importance of empathy when assisting individuals, children, families and people with disabilities in Human Services settings; and provides students with the tools to communicate effectively with clients and other Human Service professionals. Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills using case study examples, and receive training in stress management and coping techniques to promote wellness. Prerequisite(s): HUM 101 or DSP 145 .
Learning Outcomes
- Analyze and interpret ethical conduct as outlined in the various Codes of Ethical Conduct established by Human Services professions.
- Identify the boundaries and behaviors appropriate to the professional relationship between the client and the worker in a Human Services setting.
- Apply professional communication strategies that include critical thinking and respectful language when interacting with clients of diverse backgrounds and other human service professionals regardless of behaviors.
- Evaluate personal emotional and psychological fitness for a career in the Human Services field to develop a stress management plan to maintain effectiveness and mental health.
- Explain theories of human behavior and current theoretical perspectives within the human services field.
