HUM 269 Social Work and People With Disabilities Credits: (3)
This course includes a brief history of disabilities in our society, with definitions and discussions of various disability groupings, providers, services and interventions as well as many of the current issues that individuals with impairments and disabilities face today. It considers the impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and its effect on public awareness and attitudes. Prerequisite(s): HUM 101 or DSP 145 .
Learning Outcomes
- Define disabilities and identify how society defines who is disabled or impaired.
- Identify agencies serving those with disabilities both locally and nationally and the types of supports and services available.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the different attributes associated with Developmental Disabilities, Mental Illness, Health Related Disabilities, Cognitive Disabilities, Mobility Disabilities, Visual and Auditory Disabilities.
- Analyze disability culture and models of professional practice.
- Demonstrate problem solving and critical thinking skills to obtain the most appropriate services, identify individual strengths, and maximize potential for persons with disabilities.
