MAT 120 Mathematics for Technical Disciplines II

Credits: (3)
This is the second course in a two-semester sequence of dimensional analysis, intermediate algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and graphs. Topics included in MAT 120 are: trigonometry (including identities and law of sines and cosines), logarithms, exponential and logarithmic equations, graphing with log and semi-log scales, and a brief introduction to and interpretation of the differentiation of polynomials. The graphing calculator will be used throughout the course. This course is intended for technical majors. Students who successfully complete MAT 120 will have the prerequisite to enter Calculus (MAT 161 ). Prerequisite(s): C or higher in Mathematics for Technical Disciplines I (MAT 119 ) or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

SUNY Gen Ed Area(s): Mathematics
Designation(s): Liberal Arts

Learning Outcomes
  1. Perform trigonometric and inverse operations on any angle while solving trigonometric equations, using the trigonometric identities, and applying the laws of sine and cosine.
  2. Perform calculations that involve logarithms/exponential functions, including solving for the exponent, solving for any variable, base e, and base 10.
  3. Create and interpret graphs, including graphing data, and obtaining information from graphs, rectangular coordinate and logarithmic coordinate systems.
  4. Find the instantaneous rate of change by using a derivative for polynomial functions.
