MAT 119 Mathematics for Technical Disciplines I Credits: (4) This is the first course in a two-semester sequence covering dimensional analysis, intermediate algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and graphs. Emphasis is placed on strengthening algebraic skills, including scientific and engineering notation, significant figures, unit conversion, fundamental algebra concepts, functions and graphs, solving linear, quadratic, and higher-order equations, systems of equations, and right triangle trigonometry. The graphing calculator will be used throughout the course. This course is designed for technical majors. When completed, the MAT 119 and MAT 120 sequence covers the materials in Pre-Calculus (MAT 143 ) and fulfills the prerequisite for Calculus (MAT 161 ). Prerequisite(s): C or higher in Tech Math Fundamentals (MAT 103 ) and Introduction to Statistical Process Control (MAT 108 ), or C or higher in Intermediate Algebra (MAT 114 ), or equivalent, or permission of instructor.
SUNY Gen Ed Area(s): Mathematics Designation(s): Liberal Arts
Learning Outcomes
- Perform basic arithmetic functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; fractions and decimals; percentages; square roots; and ratios.
- Demonstrate the concepts of significant figures, scientific notation, and engineering notation when performing dimensional analysis and unit conversions, unit modifiers, and metric measurements, including conversion between metric and the U.S. customary system.
- Solve linear, quadratic and higher order equations, and systems of equations.
- Perform basic trigonometric operations, such as simple right triangle calculations of sine, cosine, and tangent (including inverse trigonometric functions), and geometric concepts such as perimeter, area and volume.
