PTA 104 Physical Therapy Procedures II Credits: (2) This course presents the principles, theory, effects and contraindications of forms of electrotherapy, deep heat modalities, light therapies, biofeedback and traction. Mechanisms of injury and the healing process are taught. Theory and principles of range of motion, therapeutic exercise and motor function training are introduced. Theory of peripheral joint mobilization and stretching is discussed. Basic assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries are introduced and discussed. The student will research and prepare a written and oral report on a topic related to the musculoskeletal system. Prerequisite(s): PTA 101 , PTA 102 , PTA 102L , PTA 107 , and PTA 108 , or permission of instructor. Co-requisite(s): PTA 104L , PTA 105 , and PTA 109 , or permission of instructor.
SUNY Gen Ed Area(s): Communication Learning Outcomes
- Construct and critique a presentation on a musculoskeletal injury.
- Demonstrate awareness of social responsibility as a PTA by participating in professional and community organizations that provide opportunities for volunteerism, advocacy, and leadership.
- Define and describe concepts of motor learning and how it applies to therapeutic exercise.
- Demonstrate competence in implementing range of motion exercises as a physical therapy treatment intervention identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
- Demonstrate competence in implementing therapeutic exercise to influence strength and/or power as a physical therapy treatment intervention identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
- Demonstrate competence in performing data collection skills essential for carrying out the plan of care by administering tests and measures within the scope of the practice of the PTA under the supervision of a PT: pain assessment.
- Describe the orthopedic physical therapy evaluation for individuals with musculoskeletal injuries.
- Describe physical therapy assessment and interventions (delivery, progressions, regressions) related to balance and coordination.
- Discuss the various soft tissue and joint injuries typically seen in patients/clients.
- Demonstrate competence in implementing electrotherapeutic agents as a physical therapy treatment intervention identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
- Demonstrate competence in implementing deep thermal agents as a physical therapy treatment intervention identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
- Define proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, discuss its rationale/application to physical therapy, and describe the movement patterns, the technique, and muscle groups that are important to PNF.
- Demonstrate competence in implementing stretching exercises as a physical therapy treatment intervention identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
- Demonstrate competence in implementing aerobic conditioning and econditioning as physical therapy treatment interventions identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
- Demonstrate competence in implementing postural awareness training as a physical therapy treatment intervention identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.
- Demonstrate competence in the physical therapy management of individuals with pain or injury in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions including implementing therapeutic exercise, functional training, bracing, and physical or mechanical agents.
- Demonstrate competence in the physical therapy management of individuals with various peripheral musculoskeletal injuries discussed in class including implementing therapeutic exercise, functional training, and physical or mechanical agents.
