SGT 103 Principles of Surgical Technology

Credits: (4)
An introduction to the principles of surgery, aseptic technique, and sterilization. Topics will include: instrumentation, suture types and techniques, infection control, wound management, surgical scrubbing, preparing the sterile field, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation for surgery. Prerequisite(s): SGT major; Co-requisite(s): SGT 101 , SGT 102 , and SGT 103L .

Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique.   
  2. Identify and explain surgical instrumentation.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of methods of hemostasis and drains.
  4. Understand the preparation of the surgical patient.
  5. Understand sterilization and disinfection.
  6. Understand care of surgical specimens and the procedure for bladder catheterizations.
  7. Understand the role of the circulator in the operating room
