PTA 102 Physical Therapy Procedures I Credits: (2)
The theory and practice of physical therapy procedures are begun, including patient positioning and handling techniques, skin care, heat, cold, hydrotherapy treatments and massage. Ambulation with assistive devices, transfers, activities of daily living skills and wheelchair prescription and use are taught. The theory, effects, contraindications and safety precautions of these treatments are learned. Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the PTA program or permission of instructor Co-requisite(s): PTA 101 , PTA 102L , PTA 107 , and PTA 108 , or permission of instructor.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe anatomy and proper techniques of good body mechanics, lifting and transfers.
- Discuss the body’s response to immobilization and preventive interventions.
- Describe proper patient positioning to prevent deformity and skin breakdown.
- Describe the process of tissue inflammation and repair.
- Differentiate between pressure ulcers and wounds, their classification and management.
- Describe how to select, measure and safely use various ambulation devices.
- Describe the process of pain, PT assessment and intervention.
- Discuss the theory of superficial heat and its application in physical therapy interventions.
- Discuss the theory and safe application of cryotherapy.
- Discuss the theory and safe application of hydrotherapy treatments.
- Describe appropriate wheelchair measurement, options, seating systems, maintenance and safety.
- Describe assessment of activities of daily living skills and ordering appropriate adaptive equipment.
- Discuss the theory and describe appropriate techniques of therapeutic massage.
