EMS 150 Medical Emergencies II Credits: (2)
This course is designed to introduce the students to specific pathophysiology, and assessment and management techniques for patients experiencing a medical emergency. Topics include: gynecological emergencies, obstetrical emergencies (including management of the neonate), hematological emergencies, gastrointestinal emergencies, renal and urologic emergencies, infectious and communicable diseases, psychiatric and behavioral disorders, geriatrics, abuse, special needs patients, and acute interventions for chronically ill patients. Prerequisite(s): matriculation in EMS program and C+ or higher in EMS 110 , EMS 110L , EMS 111 , EMS 112 , EMS 120 , EMS 120L , EMS 121 , EMS 130 , EMS 130L , EMS 140 , EMS 140L , and EMS 141 . Co-requisite(s): EMS 150L and EMS 151 .
Learning Outcomes
- Integrate epidemiology, morbidity, mortality, risk factors, pathophysiology, and prevention strategies with assessment findings to develop a management plan for diseases, conditions, and situations, such as gynecological emergencies, hematological emergencies, gastrointestinal emergencies, renal and urologic emergencies, immunologic emergencies, infectious and communicable diseases, geriatrics, and special needs patients.
- Demonstrate the ability to rapidly identify lifethreatening symptoms to various medical emergencies and provide the necessary life saving interventions.
- Demonstrate understanding of the structure and function of the digestive system, renal system, urinary system, lymphatic system, and immunity to include the relevant anatomy, physiology, and associated pathophysiology.
