EDU 183 Observation and Assessment of Young Children Credits: (3)
This course prepares students to use systematic observations, documentation, and other assessment techniques to understand young children’s growth and development. Observation and assessment will focus on physical, cognitive, language, and social/emotional development. Students will compile various observations and assessments in a study of one child’s development over the course of the semester. An additional component of the course will focus on observation and assessment of early childhood education environments. Prerequisite(s): EDU 180 and EDU 182 , or EDU 180 and PSY 204 .
Learning Outcomes
- Describe the rationale for and uses of authentic assessment in early childhood.
- Demonstrate proficiency in using various early childhood assessment tools and approaches.
- Interpret observation and assessment through child development domains.
- Describe appropriate assessment partnerships with families and other professionals.
- Demonstrate awareness of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct as it pertains to observation and assessment of young children.
- Demonstrate beginning competency in rating an early childhood environment using a criterion-referenced rating scale.
