EDU 281 Curriculum Development Credits: (3)
Curriculum Development explores the theoretical foundations for setting educational goals and designing developmentally appropriate, inclusive curriculum for children from birth through age eight, with a focus on preschool-aged children in group settings. Emphasis is placed on culturally responsive practices, intentional teaching, and creating meaningful learning experiences across all developmental domains. Students will engage with current models for planning, supervising, and evaluating early childhood curriculum while aligning with national standards and best practices. Students will complete a 50-hour field placement in addition to their coursework. Prior to beginning fieldwork, students must submit documentation of a medical exam and TB test using the form provided by the instructor. Prerequisite(s): EDU 180 and EDU 182 , or permission of instructor.
Learning Outcomes
- Analyze major philosophies of early childhood education and explain how they inform curriculum planning and instructional decisions.
- Define developmentally appropriate practice and apply it in planning, implementing, and evaluating meaningful learning experiences for young children.
- Design and implement at least two integrated learning experiences that promote cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language development through active, hands-on engagement.
- Demonstrate the ability to guide behavior using positive discipline techniques that support autonomy, problem-solving, and self-regulation in young children.
- Demonstrate professional responsibilities by maintaining health and safety procedures, participating in field placement with consistent attendance, and completing a reflective journal analyzing personal growth and interactions with children and families.
