HIT 110 Coding and Classification Systems I Credits: (3)
This course is designed to familiarize the student with coding and classification systems used in health information management. Emphasis will be on outpatient coding, classification, and reimbursement systems including CPT, HCPCS, APC’s, and RBRVS. Students will become familiar with both manual and automated systems. Students may be required to complete activities within a simulated electronic medical record. Prerequisite(s): C+ or higher in HIT 101 and HIT 120 ; Co-requisite(s): BIO 168 ; Pre/co-requisite(s): BIO 168 or BIO 171 and BIO 172 .
Learning Outcomes
- Describe the components of nomenclature and classification systems, outpatient billing, and reimbursement process
- Apply basic coding principles and guidelines to accurately assign CPT and/or HCPCS codes utilizing both manual and automated systems.
- Evaluate documentation to support diagnoses, tests, and treatments modalities.
- Abstract information from patient records for coding and reimbursement
- Describe various health insurance plans/programs including: Medicaid, Medicare, Indemnity plans, HMO’s, and other Managed Care Plans.
