HIT 205 Computer Applications in Health Information Management

Credits: (3)
This course is designed to familiarize the student with computer applications used in health information. Emphasis will be placed on the development, use, and maintenance of the electronic health records. Other topics covered include the various applications used in health information management. Importance and methods for confidentiality and security systems will also be addressed. Prerequisite(s): HIT 101 , HIT 102 , HIT 103 , HIT 110 .

Learning Outcomes
  1. Apply clinical vocabularies and terminologies used in the organization’s health   information system to ensure data quality and appropriateness of data and data sources in accordance with regulatory, licensing and certification guidelines.
  2. Differentiate the roles of various providers and disciplines throughout the continuum of healthcare and respond to their information needs.
  3. Utilize technology, including hardware and software, to ensure data collection, storage, analysis and reporting of information for medical research, indices and registries.
  4. Design and implement systems to collect and maintain health data, such as data elements, data sets and databases.
  5. Apply knowledge of database architecture and design (such as data dictionary, data modeling, and data warehousing) to meet departmental and organizational needs.
  6. Utilize common software applications in the execution of work processes.
  7. Use specialized software in the completion of HIM processes such as record tracking, release of information, coding, grouping, registries, billing, quality improvement and imaging.
  8. Apply policies and procedures to the use of networks, including intranet and Internet applications to facilitate the electronic health record, personal health record, public health and administrative applications.
  9. Apply confidentiality and security measures to protect electronic health information, including maintenance of user access logs/systems to track access to and disclosure of identifiable patient data and investigation of and recommendations for privacy and security issues.
  10. Protect data integrity and validity using software and hardware technology.
  11. Participate in the planning, design, selection, implementation, integration, testing, evaluation, and support for organization-wide information systems and electronic health records.
  12. Coordinate, use and maintain appropriate electronic or imaging systems for document imaging and storage.
  13. Utilize and summarize data compiled from audit trail and data quality monitoring programs.
  14. Query and design reports to facilitate information retrieval and presentation of data using appropriate software.
  15. Contribute to the design and implementation of quality improvement, risk management, contingency planning and data recovery procedures.
