PTA 201 Physical Therapy Procedures III Credits: (4)
This course applies interventions used in Procedures I and II and applies them to specific age groups and pathologies. It studies the pathology, signs, symptoms, psycho-social factors and P.T. management of disabilities related to pediatric and developmental disabilities, strokes, spinal cord injury, fractures, osteoporosis and amputation. It teaches the PTA student how to train patients in the use of an orthosis or prosthesis. Prerequisite(s): PTA major and PTA 104 , PTA 104L , PTA 105 , and PTA 109 , or permission of instructor Co-requisite(s): PTA 201L, 110, and PTA 207 , or permission of instructor.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the process of growth and development of the infant/child, and its implications to pediatric physical therapy.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the PTA in the care and treatment of a child with Cerebral Palsy (CP).
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the PTA in the care and treatment of a child with Spina Bifida (SB).
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the PTA in the care and treatment of children with Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disabilities, Cystic Fibrosis, Developmental Hip Dysplasia, Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Tetrology of Fallot, and Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.
- Demonstrate an understanding of various pediatric therapist and handling theories.
- Describe the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology and clinical picture of a cerebrovascular accident, and identify appropriate interventions following a plan of care.
- Discuss the characteristics, components and function of lower extremity orthotics and list indications and contraindications for use with patients with hemiplegia.
- Identify and discuss major etiological factors associated with spinal cord injury, and discuss appropriate interventions for rehabilitation given a plan of care.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the etiological factors associated with fractures, and discuss appropriate interventions for rehabilitation of fractures given a plan of care.
- Discuss the epidemiology, clinical manifestations and rehabilitation management of individuals with osteoporosis.
- Discuss the role of the physical therapist assistant in the care of an individual following lower extremity amputation.
- Discuss the components and function of transtibial and transfemoral prostheses and list indications, advantages and disadvantages of alternative components and materials for use with a lower extremity amputation.
- Attend at least three classes of the “Step Up To Stop Falls” exercise classes run by the OCC PTA program and offered to seniors in the community, and teach at least one class.
