HIT 229 Professional Practice Experience II Credits: (3)
Students in the health information technology program are required to complete a professional practice experience within a healthcare setting. The main purpose of this experience is to integrate the didactic (lecture) component with the clinical (practice) components. Students will utilize the knowledge they have gained from the classroom lectures and laboratory experiences in the clinical setting. Each student will spend 15 days (120 hours) in a health care facility. Students may be required to complete activities within a simulated electronic medical record. The student is responsible for the arrangement and costs of transportation to and from the clinical site, parking, and proper work attire. Prerequisite(s): C+ or higher in HIT 101 , HIT 102 , HIT 103 ,HIT 108 , HIT 110 , HIT 120 ,HIT 201 , HIT 208 , HIT 212 , HIT 224 , and permission of instructor; Co-requisite(s): HIT 230 ; Pre/co-requisite(s): HIT 202 and HIT 215 .
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Health Information/Medical Record department in the overall function of the health care institution.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of patient confidentiality throughout the clinical experience.
- Demonstrate the characteristics of a professional in their attitude throughout the clinical experience.
- Apply all facility or departmental policy and procedures relevant to the student and their clinical experience.
- Demonstrate practical experience, under close supervision of experienced practitioners in the following areas:
a. Retrieving and filing records, including record tracking.
b. Performing record completion activities, including quantitative analysis and collection data on the quality of documentation
in the patient record.
c. Designing forms for collection of patient related data and/or other data purposes.
d. Abstracting information from patient records for indices, registries, quality improvement, utilization management, research,
and user profiles.
e. Validating data quality and consistency, including appropriateness of data sources.
f. Monitoring compliance and productivity.
g. Performing data analysis and preparing patient related data for presentation.
h. Processing and monitoring the release of information and ensuring confidentiality of patient-related data.
i. Assigning diagnostic/procedure codes using ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, DSM, or other coding system for reimbursement and as
required by regulatory, licensing, and credentialing guidelines.
