HIT 224 Coding and Reimbursement Professional Practice Experience

This virtual professional practice course is designed to give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in HIT 110 and HIT 212 to scenarios and example records from a variety of healthcare settings. The students will be able to demonstrate the ability to assign diagnostic/procedure codes using codesets as required by the setting. Students will have the opportunity to support their code assignment by applying coding rules and regulations. Prerequisite(s): C+ or better in BIO 168  (or BIO 171  & BIO 172 ), HIT 110  and HIT 120 . Pre/co-requisite(s): BIO 221  and HIT 212 .

Learning Outcomes
  1. Demonstrate the ability to abstract the necessary information from a patient record in order to assign appropriate codes.     
  2. Assign diagnostic/procedure codes using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, DSM or other coding systems for reimbursement as required by regulatory, licensing and credentialing guidelines
  3. Demonstrate the ability to write professional letters and queries as necessary to validate documentation and reimbursement.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to respond to inquires for code validation utilizing knowledge of the regulatory and credentialling guidelines.
